Want a Cheap Flight? Be Flexible with your Flight Dates & Times

Finding a cheap flight is all about being flexible and getting creative. It may take some effort, but the deals are out there if you’re willing to look. Flexibility is king. Flight prices vary greatly depending on the day of the week, time of year. The flexibility to fly on another day can result in dramatically cheaper flights.

The easiest way to find cheap flights is to fly midweek or on the actual holiday like Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. On Travelradar’s cheap flight tool if you select the flexible dates option you will probably find that flying Saturday is cheaper for the local flights. This has no effect on international flights. The reason for finding cheaper flights on actual holidays or Saturdays for local flights is that fewer people tend to fly on these days, so the price of the flights go down.

You might also consider flying to a different airport, for example, flying to Abbotsford airport in British Columbia instead of Vancouver International Airport can save you some extra money on a flight ticket.

Make sure to search more than one date. Oftentimes shifting the dates by even one day can result in substantially cutting the flight price and finding a cheap flight. Be flexible with your dates/times and you’ll likely be able to save yourself some money by finding a cheaper flight.

Do not Fly at High Season

Flight prices will start to go up the closer you get to flight departure time. Sometimes there is a turning point when the airlines begin to either lower or increase the flight prices based on demand. Don’t wait until the last second but don’t book far in advance either.

The key to getting the lowest fare is to fly when others are not flying. Try to choose a flight at dead times of day, month, or year. It will vary by flight route. For example, early morning and late-night are good for leisure flight routes and mid-day is usually best for business flight routes.

Try not to fly in high seasons. Don’t fly to visit Disneyland when everyone else is flying there. Fly to places like Disneyland or Las Vegas before or after the actual holidays. at low season not only you may find cheaper flights but also you may face shorter lines right from the start of your trip at the airport.  Plan to choose a flight on Christmas day when everyone is there already.

This isn’t a hard and fast rule, though, use it as a general guide for finding a cheap flight. For domestic flights, we usually recommend booking a flight one to three months in advance, and for international flights, we recommend reserving two to six months in advance to get a cheap flight when you see a great fare or discount on a flight. Cheap flights in low season tend to pop up closer to the flight departure time. in low season when you book your flight early without having a great fare or discount you are missing your chance of flying cheaper and losing a cheap flight.

In the high season, we recommend booking your flight as early as you can. In high season flight fares tend to jump up in the last month before flight departure time. If you’re looking to travel around major holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, or during peak summertime, add a month or two to our recommendations to get a cheaper flight. Typically flight prices rise during the final 3 weeks before flight departure.

High season and peak flight months in North America and Europe are considered January through mid-May and September through early December and the most expensive time to book a flight is usually peak summer  (mid-June through mid-August), Christmas, and New Year’s Eve.

Fly Cheaper with Connecting Flights

Being flexible with the flight route you take, is another way to get a cheap flight. Most of the time it is cheaper to fly with connecting flights than taking a direct flight to your destination. Flying direct may sound great. But not always taking a direct flight is an option. If you do not mind to get to your final destination a few hours late, booking a connecting flight can be way cheaper than a non-stop direct flight. Travelradar search filters will let you filter flight itineraries by direct flight, 1 stop, 2 stops, 3 Stops, etc. At Travelradar we introduce connection flight under the “cheapest” flight Tab.

What is a connecting flight? connecting flights refer to those flights that require you to change your flight at different airports. For example, imagine you are flying with Emirates from Heathrow airport to Beijing in China. As Emirates doesn’t operate direct flight London Heathrow to Beijing, you will need to depart the aircraft in Dubai and board a new Air China flight (or even another Emirates flight) at Dubai International airport in order to get to your destination. In this case, your flight is called a connecting flight.

Things to know before booking a connecting flight

  1. Look for the required time for flight Connections at the connecting airport. To eliminate the risk of losing your connecting flight you have to know the minimum time required for you to connect to another flight at the connecting airport. Each airline sets a minimum standard connecting time at each airport it serves, and post it on their websites. Usually, the minimum connection time for international flights is 3 hours at big airports. With each connecting flight you book as a single flight ticket, the airline’s system should automatically adjust the minimum time required at your connecting airport. In this case, for any reason that is not your fault if you miss your connecting flight, the airline has to put you on the next available flight with no other charges. Some of the minimum connecting times shown on the flight tickets are short for some big airports. In some cases, flights with connecting time as low as Thirty minutes or even less than an hour for domestic-to-domestic connections are still short for big international airports.
  2. Avoid flying with multiple separate flight tickets if you have to connect to another flight. Fly on a single flight ticket when you need to connect your flights. The benefit of having a single flight ticket when you have a flight connection in your itinerary is that it usually provides for checking baggage from origin to destination, including interline transfers.
  3. where possible fly with one airline or alliance on connecting flights where possible.

Flying Discount Airlines (Low-cost Airlines) Will Help you Fly Cheaper

While a regular airline can get you anywhere, the flight price can also rise notably more. Discount Airlines or low-cost airline is an airline that is operated with an especially high emphasis on minimizing flight operating costs. Most travelers are familiar with JetBlue cheap flights and Southwest cheap flights but what are the rest of them? And can you find all low-cost airlines when you do a simple search on flights? Here at Travelradar we search for low-cost airlines worldwide. Low-cost airlines can help you save money on your flights (both domestic and international flights) and is a good alternative to flying with the major airlines whenever possible. Just be sure to watch out for hidden flight fees that they may impose on you. That is the way they make money on their flights! low-cost airlines often charge passengers for printing the boarding pass, checked bags, carry-ons, using a credit card for the purchase, or anything else they can get away with. Make sure to add up this extra cost of the flight ticket to see if the price is cheaper than the major Airlines Flights.

Search and Book Flights for Individual Passengers

If you’re traveling with friends or family, don’t search for or book a flight multiple tickets in a single purchase. Before Booking your flight make sure to search for a single traveler and compare the flight price with multiple flight travelers. Airlines always show the expensive flight ticket in a group of tickets which means you’ll end up getting a more expensive flight.

Round Trip Flight vs. One Way Flight, Which one is Cheaper

Depending on the season of your travel, sometimes in low season, you can get better round trip flight deals from some specific airlines for some tourist destinations on international flights.  This is some how true for domestic flights to domestic tourist destinations as well.

For other destinations our statistic show that there is often no difference in prices between buying a round trip flight or a one-way flight. Increased flexibility is the main benefit of buying a one-way flight ticket, as a result, it can be cheaper.  However, booking a round trip flight can be a simpler process, and sometimes if it is in the form of an airline’s low season promotion offer, then it can be a cheaper flight.
